Bellingham, WA – Residents of Western Whatcom County are under a cold weather advisory as wind chills plunge overnight. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of bitterly cold temperatures, with wind chills ranging from 15 to 20 degrees expected through 10 a.m. Saturday.
According to the NWS, frostbite and hypothermia are significant risks for anyone exposed to the cold without proper protection. Vulnerable populations, including the homeless, pets, and those without adequate heating, are particularly at risk.
Residents should take precautions, including keeping pets indoors and checking on older neighbors and family members. Use portable heaters safely and never operate generators or grills indoors, as they can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
The cold front will make Saturday morning especially challenging for outdoor activities or travel. Officials urge everyone to dress in warm layers, cover exposed skin, and limit time outdoors.
This advisory is the first significant cold weather warning of 2025, underscoring the need for preparedness during the winter season.
