Marseilles, IL – A water main leak on Main Street has led to a temporary water shutoff and icy conditions as temperatures plummet due to a polar vortex gripping much of the U.S. The City of Marseilles has urged caution on Main, Bluff, and Clark streets as repair crews continue their work.

According to the City of Marseilles, Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) officials began assisting by 7:45 p.m. with managing traffic and ice buildup. Fire hydrants were opened to relieve pressure on the water lines, causing additional ice formation along sidewalks and curbs. Wind chills are expected to dip to -13 overnight, making conditions even more hazardous.

City officials warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to take extra precautions in the repair areas due to the severe cold and slick surfaces. Crews are working to restore service and improve road safety as quickly as possible.

The city also reminded residents to stay indoors during the extreme weather, limit outdoor exposure, and check on neighbors, particularly the elderly or those without adequate heat. Updates on the repairs will be provided as conditions evolve.
