Mobile, AL – A prolonged stretch of extreme cold is gripping the Gulf Coast, prompting warnings for residents in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. Wind chills as low as 6 degrees inland and 10 degrees along the coast are forecast.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. Monday, followed by an Extreme Cold Watch from Monday evening through Wednesday morning. Areas impacted include Mobile, Pensacola, and Gulf Shores.
Officials warn that frostbite and hypothermia can occur with prolonged exposure to frigid temperatures. Additionally, exposed water pipes may freeze and burst.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, including hats and gloves, and to keep pets indoors. Water pipes should be insulated, drained, or left dripping to prevent freezing. Portable heaters should be used safely, and generators or grills must not be used indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
The cold snap underscores the need for frequent checks on older adults, neighbors, and pets. Coastal and inland areas may experience slightly different conditions, but freezing weather will remain a concern through midweek.
