Wendy Williams denies she’s cognitively impaired, says she’s imprisoned by conservatorship

Wendy Williams broke her silence and spoke about her conservatorship in an interview with “The Breakfast Club” on Thursday.

Joined by her niece Alex, Williams went on the air for her first interview in years. She denied that she is cognitively impaired and said she feels like she’s “in prison” while staying at a New York City care facility.

“I’m in this place where the people are in their 90s and their 80s and their 70s,” the 60-year-old explained to the show’s hosts DJ Envy, Charlamagne Tha God and Jess Hilarious. “There’s something wrong with these people here on this floor.”

Both Williams and her niece explained the bare living accommodations of her room within the facility, which some have claimed to be a “luxury prison.”

“It’s small, she has a bed, a chair, a TV, a bathroom and she’s looking out one window of buildings across the street,” Alex said.

Williams chimed in saying that the person who placed her in the facility used the former radio host’s own money to buy her a TV per her request. The person she’s referring to is her guardian Sabrina E. Morrisey.

Morrisey is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with A&E and Lifetime. She sued the two companies to try and block the docuseries “Where Is Wendy Williams?” She claimed Williams was in “a vulnerable state” and her condition was exploited. The project came out right after it was revealed that Williams was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia.

However, the two networks countersued, claiming that Morrisey only wanted to block the docuseries because it criticized her job as a guardian and even cited “guardianship abuse.”

“What do I think about being abused? This system is broken,” she told the hosts. “This system has falsified a lot.”

Williams explained that Morrisey wanted to do the docuseries and the two of them watched it together and took notes.

She didn’t elaborate much about her thoughts on the docuseries, which Charlamagne noted that, legally, she has to be careful what she says publicly.

When Charlamagne explained that her team claimed she’s “cognitively impaired” and “incapacitated,” she immediately shot back asking: “Do I seem that way? God d–nit.”

“No,” he responded as he explained to the audience that his former cohost had been calling him “five times a day for the past two weeks.”

In November, a court filing claimed Williams was “permanently incapacitated” as her dementia progressed. Morrisey described Williams as “an acclaimed entertainer who, tragically, has been afflicted by early-onset dementia and, as a result, has become cognitively impaired and permanently incapacitated.”

DJ Envy noted that listening to Williams speak, these claims don’t seem true.

Williams continued to talk about her current living conditions and that the facility is administering her “seven pills a day,” and she has no idea what they’re for.

“For the past three years, I’ve been caught up in this system,” she said sounding defeated. Later she explained she spent the past three birthdays by herself due to the people around her within the facility.

She explained that she doesn’t have a laptop or an iPad. She does have a phone, but she’s only able to make outgoing calls.

Williams expressed her desire to leave New York City for Miami to be with her parents, her son and her niece Alex. She noted that her father is turning 94 soon and she wants to be there for his birthday, as her mom passed away some time ago.

However, she’s unsure Morrisey will let her because she claimed she denied her request.

“I am exhausted thinking about, what if I can’t see my dad for his birthday? At 94, the day after that is not promised,” Williams said as she started to cry. “My life is, like, f–ked up.”

Alex said that if people want to support Williams, they can use the hashtag #FreeWendy or sign a Change.Org petition.

From 2008 to 2021, Williams hosted the popular daytime talk show “The Wendy Williams Show.” She stepped away due to health issues tied to lymphedema and Graves’ disease. The show aired its final episode in June 2022. She was placed under legal guardianship in May 2022 when Wells Fargo claimed she was an “incapacitated person” and the “victim of undue influence and financial exploitation,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

KTLA 5 has reached out to Morrisey to respond to these claims and has not heard back.
