Lemont, IL – A high-speed crash involving a Tesla in Will County early Monday morning left one person dead and two others injured near a Target store on 135th Street.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 2:11 a.m. when Lemont Police and Cook County Police responded to a single-vehicle accident about a quarter-mile west of Archer Avenue. Emergency crews extricated the 34-year-old male driver, while a 36-year-old male passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies reported that a 33-year-old male passenger in the back seat was ejected from the vehicle and airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in critical condition. The driver was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in stable condition.
Investigators say the Tesla Model 3 was traveling eastbound at high speed when it lost control on a curve, crossed into oncoming traffic, and struck a curb. The vehicle became airborne, landed near the Target store entrance, and continued northeast, hitting a median and another curb before going down an embankment. It ultimately stopped on the east side of Long Run Creek.
Authorities temporarily closed roads in the area for investigation. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time.
