Woman in Critical Condition After Being Hit by Car in Salt Lake City, Driver Initially Fled

SALT LAKE CITY – A woman is in critical condition after being struck by a car on California Avenue in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, according to the Salt Lake City Police Department.

A 50-year-old lady walking near 4980 West was struck by a silver vehicle shortly after 5:30 a.m., according to police. According to police, the driver originally fled the area before returning to phone 911.

Officials stated that they were cooperating with police and were being questioned as part of the crash investigation.

“There are no crosswalks here, so we don’t know what caused the crash. That is why the major crash team is on the scene,” SLCPD Public Information Officer Yaier Javaid explained.

Officials notified about 6 a.m. that travel in the vicinity would be considerably delayed.

Police said it was dark and the roads were sloppy, but it was unclear whether these factors contributed to the incident.

It was also unclear what the woman was doing in the neighborhood, and authorities were unsure whether she worked for any of the businesses around the incident.

Police have not issued any tickets as of Tuesday.
