CARY, N.C. — A road rage incident in Cary turned tragic when a 5-year-old girl was struck by a bullet that tore through her leg and lodged in her sippy cup, according to authorities.
The child, identified only as Ema, is now recovering after undergoing multiple surgeries and is expected to begin physical therapy soon.
“She’s just a bundle of joy, always smiling and playing and running around. Just an angel, honestly,” said Aubree Allison, Ema’s aunt. “For something like this to happen to such a sweet and innocent child is heartbreaking.”
What Happened?
According to court documents, the shooting occurred on U.S. Route 1 between the U.S. 64 offramp and the Cary Parkway overpass.
Charles Edward Stevenson Jr., 20, allegedly fired into a Ford F-150 pickup truck that Ema’s father was driving, striking the little girl in the leg.
The bullet reportedly became lodged in her sippy cup, intensifying public outrage over the reckless nature of the act.
Charges Upgraded
Stevenson Jr. was initially charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied property, but on Wednesday, July 2, prosecutors upgraded the charges based on new evidence. He now faces:
- Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill
- Inflicting serious injury
District Attorney Lorrin Freeman confirmed the revised charges, stating, “Based on new information, the charges were upgraded.”
During his court appearance, Judge Eagles ordered Stevenson Jr. to be held without bond. His next hearing is scheduled for July 23.
