LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA — A magnitude 2.7 earthquake struck just a mile northeast of the Sherman Oaks neighborhood late Tuesday night, causing a brief but sharp shake that rattled residents across parts of Los Angeles, including North Hollywood.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the tremor occurred at 11:22 p.m., and locals quickly took to social media to share their experiences of the sudden jolt. Witnesses described the shaking as brief but strong enough to catch them off guard.
“Just felt an earthquake in North Hollywood,” one social media user posted. Another resident from Sherman Oaks wrote, “Yep, we definitely felt it.” A third person added, “That was such a sudden jolt, I was legit confused if something hit the building or not.”
While the earthquake startled many residents, no damage or injuries have been reported at this time. The Los Angeles Fire Department has not issued any alerts, but officials are reminding the public to review earthquake preparedness plans, as the tremor serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity.
California Earthquake: A Stark Reminder of Seismic Vulnerability
Though the earthquake was relatively small, its occurrence reminds residents of the constant seismic risks in California, particularly given the state’s location along the Ring of Fire — a seismically active zone around the Pacific Ocean.
Local authorities encourage the public to stay prepared for larger seismic events, which could follow this tremor.
As of now, there have been no further aftershocks or significant seismic activity reported in the immediate aftermath.
Peru Earthquake: A More Powerful 5.6 Magnitude Tremor Causes Deaths and Injuries
Meanwhile, in Peru, a much stronger 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off the coast of central Peru on the same day, causing widespread damage and at least one fatality.
The quake hit at 11:35 a.m. local time, with the epicenter located 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Callao, just west of the capital city, Lima.
The tremor caused significant shaking throughout Lima and its neighboring port city, Callao, with reports of structural damage and widespread chaos.
Tragically, a 36-year-old man was killed in northern Lima when a wall from a building under construction’s fourth floor collapsed onto him while he was standing outside his vehicle, waiting for a passenger.
In addition to the fatality, five people were injured, and hospitals are currently treating those affected. Damage to infrastructure, including roads and educational facilities, has also been reported. Local media captured scenes of damaged vehicles, wrecked homes, and fallen billboards.
Tremors Felt Across Lima
The earthquake was felt across all districts of Lima, and it disrupted daily life in the region. A soccer game at Lima’s Alberto Gallardo Stadium was temporarily halted, and a religious service at Lima’s cathedral was interrupted as congregants rushed to evacuate.
Hernando Tavera, the executive president of the Geophysical Institute of Peru, confirmed that the quake affected all areas of Lima. In addition, radio stations reported disruptions as citizens scrambled for safety in the immediate aftermath.
