SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA — Police have arrested a man suspected of being involved in two separate shootings in Santa Monica, following a citywide search on Wednesday.
The Arrest
The unidentified suspect was taken into custody around 4:20 p.m. at Palisades Park, located near the intersection of Ocean and Idaho avenues.
Described as “armed and dangerous,” the man was wanted in connection with a shooting that took place over the weekend, as well as a shooting that occurred on Wednesday during the police operation to take him into custody.
The Shooting Incidents
On Wednesday afternoon, police attempted to apprehend the suspect near the Santa Monica Place outdoor shopping center.
The suspect, however, opened fire on officers, striking one of them in the hand. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital, with authorities stating the wounds were not life-threatening.
Following the shooting, a search was initiated across the shopping center and surrounding areas of downtown Santa Monica.
The Weekend Shooting and Connection to the Suspect
Santa Monica Mayor Lana Negrete confirmed that the suspect was believed to be involved in a shooting incident over the weekend, where he allegedly shot at a driverless Waymo taxi, injuring two teenage passengers.
The two teens injured in that incident were last reported to be in stable condition, officials said.
The Search and Arrest
A 3.5-hour search was conducted on Wednesday, leading to the suspect’s eventual arrest. The suspected weapon, a handgun, was recovered at the scene.
