Metrobus to Eliminate Service at Over 500 Stops, New Routes Announced

Started Sunday, June 29, Metrobus will implement a major redesign of its system, eliminating over 500 bus stops across Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

This is part of the Better Bus Network overhaul, which is the first such redesign of the system in over 50 years.

What is the Better Bus Network?

The Better Bus Network redesign aims to update the Metrobus system to meet the current needs of the region.

WMATA General Manager Randy Clarke stated that over the years, changes such as new hospitals, schools, and developments like NOMA have occurred, but the transit system hasn’t adapted accordingly.

The redesign is a response to this need for more efficient and current transit routes.

What Changes Can Riders Expect?

  • All bus routes and schedules will change. The routes will be renamed with new letter designations. For example, routes in the District of Columbia will now be named with “D” for downtown and “C” for crosstown routes.
  • More than 500 bus stops will be eliminated, though Metro assures riders that most of these will have alternative nearby stops.

How to Find Out if Your Bus Stop is Affected:

Metro has posted signs at the affected bus stops to notify riders about the upcoming changes. You can also visit the WMATA website to check the full list of eliminated bus stops.

To find your new bus route, follow these steps:

  • Go to WMATA’s Better Bus page
  • Type in your current route in the “New Bus Network Tool”
  • Click on “Find My New Route” to see the updated route options.

Rider Reactions:

Some riders are expressing concern about the removal of their closest bus stops. For example, 82-year-old Yvonne Williams, who relies on the D8 line to get to medical appointments, stated that her nearest stop will be removed.

However, WMATA officials are emphasizing that the redesign will improve service for most riders, particularly those from lower-income areas who have no other transportation options.

Additional Local Changes:

In addition to the Metrobus changes, other local transit systems are also adjusting their services:

  • Montgomery County Ride On will implement changes on June 29.
  • Prince George’s County TheBus will adjust its services on June 30.
