Arkansas Education Department Awards Bonuses to Over 4,200 Teachers

Arkansas— More than 4,200 Arkansas teachers will be receiving bonuses of up to $10,000 this year as part of the LEARNS Merit Teacher Incentive Fund Program, announced by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday. The increase in bonus recipients is a significant jump from the previous year’s 3,000 educators.

LEARNS Act to Reward High-Performing Teachers

These bonuses are part of the broader efforts of the LEARNS Act, a comprehensive education reform bill aimed at teacher retention and recognizing the contributions of high-performing educators. Governor Sanders emphasized the importance of teachers in student success:

“Behind every successful student is a dedicated teacher,” she said. The LEARNS Act not only raised starting teacher pay from $36,000 to $50,000 annually but also introduced the Merit Teacher Incentive Fund Program to continue rewarding teachers for their hard work.

How Are Teachers Chosen for the Bonuses?

The Arkansas Department of Education explained that the Merit Teacher Incentive Fund Program recognizes teachers who have made a measurable impact on student performance, served as mentors, or taken on roles in high-need subject areas.

For the 2024–2025 school year:

  • Over 800 teachers will receive bonuses exceeding $5,000.

  • More than 70 educators will receive the full $10,000 award.

Positive Impact and Success of LEARNS

Education Secretary Jacob Oliva praised the increase in recipients, noting, “The increase in the number of educators receiving merit pay this year demonstrates the positive impact LEARNS has had on education in Arkansas.”

Several past recipients shared their appreciation for the program, calling the bonuses a meaningful recognition of the dedication required in their profession. One teacher from Mountainburg shared how the program has motivated them to continue improving:

“It showed that the hard work I put into teaching is making a difference,” said the teacher. “It motivated me to keep trying new ways to help my students succeed.”

The LEARNS Act: Education Reform in Arkansas

The LEARNS Act, passed in 2023, includes a wide range of education reforms aimed at improving the quality of education in Arkansas, including increased teacher salaries and expanded school choice options.

The bonuses provided through the LEARNS program are part of a larger effort to invest in the future of education, improve teacher morale, and help students thrive across the state.
