No More Paper Checks SSDI Recipients Must Update Payment Method by September 30

If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments through paper checks, you need to take action now to avoid having your payments suspended in the near future.

Starting September 30, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the U.S. Department of the Treasury will stop sending paper checks for federal payments, including SSDI.

Why Is This Change Happening?

The government is shifting to electronic payments to improve payment security, as paper checks are more susceptible to theft, loss, and fraud.

Additionally, electronic payments reduce administrative costs, saving the government significant amounts of money each year. The SSA believes that modernizing the payment system will also help streamline processes and ensure more timely payments.

Who Will Be Affected?

Currently, around 494,000 people still receive their SSDI payments via paper checks in the United States. If you are one of these beneficiaries, your payments will be suspended unless you switch to an electronic payment method before the deadline on September 30, 2025.

What You Need to Do to Keep Your SSDI Payments:

It’s easy to switch to electronic payments! Follow these steps to avoid interruptions in your benefits:

Create or log in to your “My Social Security” account:

Visit the official website at https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/ to create or log into your account. This is the fastest and safest way to update your payment method.

Choose Your Payment Method:

  • Direct Deposit: Provide your bank’s name, account number, routing number, and account type.
  • Direct Express Card: A prepaid debit card that is issued by the federal government, which you can use for withdrawals, purchases, and online payments.

Ensure Accurate Information

Double-check all entered information to avoid any delays or suspension of your payments.

Key Dates to Remember:

  • April 14, 2025: Starting this date, the SSA will require identity verification for those wishing to change their payment method. You can verify your identity online or visit an SSA office if you lack internet access.
  • September 30, 2025: This is the final day to switch to electronic payments. After this date, paper checks will no longer be issued, and if you haven’t updated your method, your SSDI payments will be suspended.

What If I Don’t Have Access to the Internet?

If you are unable to complete the process online, you can visit your local SSA office for assistance in switching to electronic payments. However, it’s important to act early, as this change impacts a large number of people across the nation.

Don’t Wait — Take Action Now!

Ensure that you don’t lose your SSDI benefits by switching to electronic payments today. For more information and to get started, visit ridgecrestpact.org.
