Long Beach man charged with shooting 64-year-old roommate
A man has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing his roommate at their Long Beach residence.
According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers responded to the 3000 block of Gold Star Drive regarding a possible suicide around 8:48 a.m. Tuesday.
Upon arriving on scene, the officers located a male adult victim with a life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body. Fire department paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
He was identified as 64-year-old Tyrone Crawford.
“Due to the nature of the incident, homicide detectives responded to further the investigation,” LBPD said in a media release. “The suspect was on scene when on scene and was taken into custody as part of the investigation.”
Detectives later learned that Crawford and the suspect – 30-year-old Trayen Gaston – shared a residence, and evidence was found that indicated Gaston as the suspect, police said.
He was subsequently arrested and booked on one count of murder as well as one count of being a prohibited possessor of a firearm and another count of prohibited possession of ammunition.
Gaston’s bail was set at $2 million.
The motive for the shooting and the circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Homicide Detectives Eric Thai and Chasen Contreras by calling 562-570-7244.
