Lake County, Indiana: Steel Coil Spill on Cline Avenue Causes Major Traffic Disruption

East Chicago, IN – A flatbed semi hauling a steel coil tipped over in East Chicago, spilling its load and leaking diesel fuel. The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday as the truck exited a steel mill onto Cline Avenue near the Inland overpass.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the semi spilled up to 75 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway. The steel coil also fell onto the road, creating additional hazards. Hazmat crews were dispatched to handle the fuel cleanup, prompting the closure of Cline Avenue near Michigan Street.

No injuries were reported, but officials urged drivers to avoid the area as cleanup operations continued. Authorities have not provided an estimated reopening time for the roadway.

The response included multiple agencies working to secure the site and minimize environmental impact. Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
