Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service has allowed the Winter Weather Advisoryto expire at 6 a.m. CST (7 a.m. EST) Thursday, but lingering icy conditions remain a concern for residents across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago, freezing precipitation has ended, but untreated roads, sidewalks, and driveways remain slick. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing later this morning, improving conditions. Until then, pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution when traveling.
Affected areas include Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties in Illinois, along with Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton counties in Indiana. Major cities impacted include Chicago, Rockford, Aurora, Joliet, Waukegan, and Valparaiso.
Drivers should remain alert for black ice, especially on overpasses and bridges. Pedestrians are advised to use handrails and avoid icy patches to prevent falls.
