Beloved Theme Park California’s Great America Faces Closure After 2027

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA — After decades of thrilling rides, fireworks displays, and iconic treats, California’s Great America may be nearing its final chapter. Six Flags Chief Financial Officer, Brian Witherow, hinted at the theme park’s uncertain future during the company’s Investor Day in May, noting that unless a lease extension is granted, the park could close after the 2027 season.

The Lease: Expiration and Possible Extension

Currently, the lease for the 112-acre property beneath California’s Great America is set to expire in 2028, but Six Flags has the option to extend it by five additional years, potentially pushing the park’s closure to 2033.

However, Witherow’s comments cast doubt on the future of the beloved theme park, as he mentioned that the park’s last season could occur before the lease expiration if no extension is pursued.

Despite the potential for closure, Six Flags officials have emphasized that a final decision has yet to be made.

“At this time, we are still in the planning stages and are working with city officials and engaging the community. Until we know more, we remain focused on the great season that’s already underway at the park and the events ahead,” said a spokesperson for the park in a statement.

The Land Sale: A Potential Catalyst for Change

The uncertainty surrounding the park’s future comes on the heels of a 2022 land sale, when Cedar Fair, the park’s previous owner, sold the property underneath California’s Great America to Prologis, a San Francisco logistics real estate firm, for $310 million.

Since then, Prologis has been working on developing long-term plans for the land, which could involve repurposing the area for other commercial or residential uses.

However, according to The San Francisco Chronicle, Prologis has stated that there are no immediate plans to change the property’s current use, and the theme park will continue operations for the time being.

“We’re focused on identifying and partnering with planning and design experts to help us create a master plan for the property,” Jennifer Nelson, a Prologis spokesperson told.

A Storied History: From Marriott’s Great America to Six Flags

Since opening in 1976 as Marriott’s Great America, the park has become a cornerstone of the Northern California entertainment scene.

It has entertained generations with its exciting rides, live shows, and festive events. Over the years, the park has changed ownership, becoming part of Six Flags after Cedar Fair acquired it in 2019.

Despite the looming uncertainty, California’s Great America is still looking ahead to exciting events in the coming months, including the Star-Spangled Nights, presented by M&M’s, on July 4 and 5, as well as its Labor Day Weekend Celebration.

What’s Next: The Community’s Role

As discussions continue about the park’s future, local residents and visitors have expressed their desire to keep California’s Great America open. For many, the theme park holds sentimental value, with memories of family outings, thrilling rides, and festive celebrations.

While the fate of the park remains uncertain, park officials continue to focus on delivering a great experience for guests this season, with several upcoming events scheduled to mark the summer months.

It remains to be seen whether the park’s final chapter will come sooner than expected or if new opportunities will allow for its continued operation.
