California Donors Show Little Enthusiasm for Kamala Harris' Potential Governor Run

San Francisco, California — Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ potential candidacy for California governor in 2026 is not garnering much enthusiasm from Democratic fundraisers, according to a recent report by Politico.

Lack of Enthusiasm Among California Fundraisers

Harris, who lost in the 2024 presidential race to Donald Trump, is reportedly considering a run to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.

However, interviews with several major Democratic Party donors in California reveal that Harris’ gubernatorial campaign does not have the fervent backing that one might expect from such a high-profile figure.

One Southern California fundraiser stated, “She still would probably lead, but honestly, no one is incredibly pumped.”

Uncertainty Surrounding Harris’ 2026 Gubernatorial Run

Despite having a significant name recognition advantage, Harris’ entry into the race remains uncertain. A source close to her camp told earlier this year that she plans to decide by the end of summer whether she will pursue the 2026 gubernatorial race.

The former vice president also has the option of running for president again in 2028.

Early polling in the 2028 Democratic presidential race shows Harris leading other potential contenders, but Democratic donors in California seem more reserved about her political future.

Lingering Frustrations Over 2024 Presidential Loss

A number of California Democratic donors expressed reluctance, with some fearing Harris’ reemergence could bring back memories of the 2024 presidential campaign, which ended in defeat and left her campaign deep in debt.

One donor described the experience of supporting Harris’ campaign as “traumatizing,” criticizing the Democratic Party for their handling of the race, especially concerns over President Biden’s cognitive decline.

Mather Martin, a party fundraiser based in San Francisco who previously worked for Harris’ campaigns, noted, “There was more enthusiasm at first, but I think it waned a bit.”

Call for a Clear Plan from Harris

Additionally, some donors have suggested that Harris must demonstrate a clear and compelling plan if she is to run for governor. They emphasized the need for Harris to restore confidence and present a strong, actionable roadmap for her potential campaign.

“She’s going to have to work for the nomination. Every day that passes, there’s less of a sense of inevitability about her candidacy,” said Scott Drexel, a donor-adviser from the Bay Area.

Harris Faces Tough Political Challenges

Prominent trial lawyer Joe Cotchett, another California Democratic donor, commented that Harris has been engaging with various stakeholders across the state to gauge support for a gubernatorial bid. But, he added, “If she does, she’s going to have very difficult problems.”

Harris’ potential gubernatorial run seems to be facing a tough uphill battle for support, and time will tell if she can win over the party’s major donors and shift the narrative surrounding her 2024 presidential loss.
