China's Luckin Coffee Opens Its First U.S. Stores in New York City

New York City, NY — Luckin Coffee, a popular Chinese coffee chain, made its debut in the United States on Monday, opening two stores in Manhattan — one in Greenwich Village at 755 Broadway and the other in Chelsea at 800 6th Ave.

The Xiamen-based company, which has rapidly expanded across Asia, is now taking aim at the U.S. coffee market, offering a more affordable and app-based coffee experience that could shake up the dominance of Starbucks.

A New Coffee Player in the U.S.

Luckin Coffee’s arrival in NYC has been highly anticipated, with the brand teasing its “soft openings” on social media, offering promotional deals to attract customers.

The company made its announcement last week, posting on Instagram: “Drip level: International. The rumors are true, NYC. You’re luckin now.”

Rapid Growth in Asia

Since its launch in 2017, Luckin Coffee has expanded to over 24,000 locations across China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

Despite facing setbacks such as a major accounting scandal and a $475 million loss last year, the company’s profit margins have seen significant growth. In the past quarter, Luckin reported $1.2 million in revenue, marking a 41% increase from the previous year.

The company’s success has been partly attributed to its app-based model, which eliminates the need for cashiers and allows customers to place orders directly through the app.

This model, inspired by ride-hailing businesses, is designed to maximize efficiency and keep costs low. In China, the company’s drinks are 30% cheaper than Starbucks, which has contributed to its popularity in the region.

Menu Offerings and Competitive Pricing

Luckin Coffee’s menu features a wide range of drinks, from traditional lattes and matcha to more unconventional options like the “fruity Americano” series.

The company also offers pastries, such as banana yogurt loaves, chocolate-chip cookies, and sausage, egg, and cheese croissants.

While Luckin’s prices in China are significantly lower than Starbucks’, its pricing in the U.S. is more competitive. A 16-ounce drip coffee at Luckin costs $3.45, compared to $3.65 at Starbucks.

Similarly, a 16-ounce iced matcha at Luckin is priced at $6.45, just 20 cents more than Starbucks’ $6.25. Bagels at both companies are priced similarly at $3.25.

Facing Off with Starbucks

Luckin Coffee’s entry into the U.S. market comes at a time when Starbucks is undergoing its own brand overhaul with the “Back to Starbucks” campaign, aimed at addressing declining sales and revenue.

While Starbucks has more than 17,000 locations across the U.S., Luckin’s app-based ordering and lower prices could pose a significant challenge, especially in urban areas like New York City.

In 2023, Luckin overtook Starbucks in China, gaining a significant market share with its convenient in-app ordering and lower-priced offerings.

Whether Luckin’s strategy will work as effectively in the U.S. remains to be seen, but the company’s rapid growth and substantial app user base — over 120 million registered users — is something Starbucks will have to reckon with.

A Competitive Edge

While Starbucks offers its own mobile app for ordering and rewards, Luckin’s approach to affordability and convenience could make it a serious contender in the U.S. coffee market. With its competitive pricing, extensive menu, and tech-savvy approach, Luckin Coffee is set to make waves in the coffee industry.
