Newport, NC – Bitter cold weather is set to grip Eastern North Carolina tonight as wind chills plunge to single digits. Temperatures will drop as low as 19°F by Tuesday night, with “feels-like” conditions dipping to the teens or even lower. Residents should take immediate precautions to protect themselves, pets, and homes as freezing temperatures persist through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport, a stiff breeze combined with below-freezing temperatures will result in dangerous wind chill values. Tuesday’s high is forecast at 46°F, but overnight lows will reach 21°F, with wind gusts as high as 18 mph. Wednesday will remain cold, with a high of only 39°F.
The Weather Service urges people to minimize outdoor exposure, insulate pipes, and ensure pets are indoors. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly should be checked on to ensure their safety. Additionally, residents are encouraged to open cabinets near exposed plumbing and drip faucets to prevent freezing.
The cold weather is expected to ease slightly by Thursday, with highs climbing to 47°F. By Friday, temperatures will return to a more seasonable 51°F under sunny skies. However, a weekend storm system could bring rain late Saturday into Sunday.
Stay updated with your local forecast and take steps to prepare for the extreme cold over the next two days. Protecting yourself, pets, and property is essential as the region endures this Arctic blast.
