Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A 28-year-old woman, Gerelys Sanchez-Reyes, has been arrested in Madrid, Spain, after months of investigation into the murder of Yuleisy Carolina Torrelles Martinez, whose body was found stuffed inside a futon in her Philadelphia apartment. Sanchez-Reyes will soon be extradited to the United States to face charges of murder.
The Discovery of the Body:
On April 5, Philadelphia police responded to a welfare check at Martinez’s apartment on the 4400 block of Frankford Avenue. Friends of Martinez, 21, had reported her missing after they had not heard from her for several days.
Upon entering her apartment, officers found her body wrapped in a shower curtain and hidden inside a futon. Authorities confirmed that Martinez had been stabbed multiple times in the neck and torso.
The Search for the Suspect:
Just a week after the discovery of Martinez’s body, Sanchez-Reyes was identified as the primary suspect in the case. Philadelphia police issued an arrest warrant for her on April 12, 2023.
The U.S. Marshals Service joined the search, and on Thursday, they announced that Sanchez-Reyes had been taken into custody in Madrid, Spain. She is now awaiting extradition to the United States.
Background on the Victim:
Martinez had moved to Philadelphia less than a year before her death. She was a waitress, trying to build a new life in the city. Angel Cardona, a local business owner, spoke about the young woman’s life, recalling how she had come to purchase furniture for her apartment a year ago.
Cardona expressed his heartbreak over the tragedy, saying, “It’s very tragic and mind-blowing. It’s very unfortunate that happened. She’s obviously a young lady, just starting out in life. And it’s a shame.”

Unclear Motive:
At this time, it is unclear whether Sanchez-Reyes and Martinez knew each other, or how the two might have been connected.
There is also no clarity on why Sanchez-Reyes may have fled to Spain following the crime. Further investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to piece together the details leading up to the murder.
What Happens Next:
Sanchez-Reyes is expected to face murder charges upon her extradition. As the investigation continues, authorities are looking into her connections in both Philadelphia and Spain, as well as her possible motives for the killing.
