Indianapolis, IN – Indiana lawmakers are considering a plan to redraw state borders, potentially adding 30 Illinois counties to Indiana. The proposal, outlined in House Bill 1008, would create a commission to evaluate the feasibility of the change.

According to Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston, who authored the bill, the commission would include ten members, five each from Indiana and Illinois. Appointees will study the potential economic, political, and logistical impacts of such a border adjustment. The bill has been referred to the House Government and Regulatory Reform Committee.

If passed, the commission would have 60 days to present findings and recommendations to the Indiana General Assembly. Any boundary change would require approval from both state legislatures and Congress. Huston emphasized the plan’s potential benefits, including uniting communities and improving local governance.

The 30 counties under consideration reportedly align politically and economically with Indiana. Proponents argue this could boost regional development, though critics cite significant legal and administrative hurdles.

The bill takes effect on July 1 if enacted, marking the first step in a lengthy process.
