New Jersey Man Shot in Head by Popeyes Worker After Parking Lot Altercation

A New Jersey Popeyes worker is facing multiple charges after allegedly shooting at a car, hitting the driver in the head, following what his lawyers claim was an ambush by a group of individuals.

Christian Ruiz, 18, was working as a cashier and prep cook at a Mays Landing Popeyes when the incident occurred on June 9, shortly after the restaurant closed.

The Incident

According to reports, Ruiz was attacked by a group of six individuals in the Popeyes parking lot after hours. Ruiz reportedly suffered injuries to his face, head, and neck during the altercation.

As the group attempted to flee the scene, Ruiz allegedly fired at their car, striking the driver in the head.

The victim was rushed to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for the gunshot wound. Meanwhile, Ruiz, who also sought medical attention for his injuries, was arrested the following day on June 10.

Self-Defense Claims

Ruiz’s defense attorneys claim the shooting was an act of self-defense, arguing that Ruiz was ambushed by the group in a revenge attack over a supposed incident involving a car.

According to Ruiz’s lawyer, John Zarych, one of the suspects called Ruiz beforehand, saying, “Manny called and said he wanted to do something… He had a plan to get revenge on the people who messed up his car.”

Superior Court Judge Joseph Levin, while acknowledging the possibility of a gang assault, stated that using a firearm in response to the attack was “a disproportionate amount of force.”

Charges and Release

Ruiz has been charged with 23 offenses, including six counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, and aggravated assault by discharging a firearm into a vehicle. Despite the severity of the charges, Ruiz was released from prison on Tuesday, pending trial.

His co-workers at Popeyes expressed surprise at the incident, describing Ruiz as a model employee who had never missed a shift and had a job waiting for him once the case was resolved.

Legal Implications

As the case unfolds, the question remains whether Ruiz acted in self-defense or went beyond reasonable force. His release pending trial indicates that there may be significant legal debates over the use of force in this particular case.

The outcome of his trial could set a precedent for similar self-defense claims involving firearms in potentially dangerous confrontations.
