SF Pride Launches 2025 Celebration Centered on ‘Queer Joy Is Resistance’

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — San Francisco Pride has officially arrived, marking the start of one of the largest and most anticipated LGBTQ+ celebrations in the country.

While the big parade doesn’t take place until Sunday, the first official event of the Pride festivities kicks off tonight, signaling the beginning of a week-long celebration of diversity, inclusion, and joy.

This year’s Pride theme, “Queer Joy is Resistance,” reflects the current political climate in the United States. Organizers have stated that the theme is a direct response to the growing tensions and challenges the LGBTQ+ community faces, both locally and nationally.

A Message of Inclusion and Defiance

Suzanne Ford, the Executive Director of SF Pride, emphasized the importance of this year’s theme, saying, “If you decide to come down and join us on Pride Sunday, then you’re sending a message to Washington, D.C., to the rest of the country, and to the world that here in San Francisco our values are inclusion, diversity, equity, being with each other, and joy.”

As the celebrations unfold, the message is clear: San Francisco Pride is more than just a celebration—it’s an act of resistance and defiance against those who seek to undermine the rights and freedoms of the LGBTQ+ community.

Prioritizing Safety Amid a Challenging Climate

Safety and security have always been a priority for the San Francisco Pride organization, but in light of the current political climate, organizers have made additional efforts to ensure the well-being of all participants. In coordination with city leaders and public safety officials, the organizers are taking extra precautions this year.

Ford acknowledged the delicate balancing act organizers face.

While the focus is on creating a safe environment for celebration, it’s equally important for attendees to feel empowered and joyful. “We want people to be joyous and defiant, as well as safe,” Ford said.

Preparations and Briefings for Pride Events

To ensure everything runs smoothly, San Francisco’s Public Safety and Emergency Services Department will host an event on Thursday to brief residents on the city’s preparations for the massive celebration.

This includes ensuring proper security protocols for one of the largest Pride events in the country.

As of Tuesday, there were no known threats to the festivities, and Ford stated that they are keeping a close eye on online activity to ensure safety measures are in place.

“We are making sure that we are checking online to make sure that at this point we feel good about what we’re facing and that we’ve done all the preparation that we’re supposed to,” Ford said.

Looking Ahead: A Celebration of Pride, Joy, and Resistance

As San Francisco Pride kicks off tonight and heads into the weekend, the message is clear: Queer Joy is a form of resistance, and San Francisco will stand strong in the face of adversity.

This year’s Pride celebration will not only be a time of joy and defiance but also a time to unite, celebrate, and defend the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
