Southern California Mother and Boyfriend Convicted of Murdering 7-Year-Old Girl

Hawthorne, California —  A Los Angeles County jury has found a Hawthorne mother and her boyfriend guilty of murder and torture in the heartbreaking death of 7-year-old A’Miya Dawson, a case that has shocked the South Bay community and beyond.

On July 2, 2025, after a 10-week trial, Ida Helen Brockman, 34, and Malachi Xavier Whalen, 33, were convicted of first-degree murder and torture, with special circumstances indicating the murder was committed with intentional torture.

A Disturbing Crime Unfolds

The case began on Sept. 9, 2021, when the couple brought an unresponsive A’Miya to Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in Willowbrook.

Doctors found the child covered in severe injuries. Alarmed by signs of abuse, hospital staff contacted Hawthorne Police.

A follow-up investigation led detectives to the family’s apartment on El Segundo Boulevard, where they uncovered a disturbing crime scene. Brockman and Whalen were taken into custody shortly afterward.

Shocking Medical Findings

According to the L.A. County Medical Examiner, A’Miya had endured long-term physical abuse and torture, suffering:

  • Over 58 separate injuries
  • Severe burns
  • Multiple fractured ribs
  • Blunt force trauma
  • A collapsed lung
  • Other significant internal injuries

Authorities also revealed that the couple attempted to frame A’Miya’s biological father, but Brockman later admitted to the false accusations.

Trial Outcome and Charges

Following extensive testimony and forensic evidence:

  • Both defendants were found guilty of murder and torture
  • Brockman was additionally convicted of child abuse causing death
  • Whalen was also found guilty of assault on a child causing death

They now face life sentences without the possibility of parole. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 12 at the Airport Courthouse in Los Angeles.
