Albany, New York — A growing divide among New York Democrats has emerged over Zohran Mamdani, the progressive socialist candidate for mayor, with suburban Democrats expressing increasing concerns about his policies and their potential political fallout.

Democratic Concerns About Mamdani’s Socialist Policies

Several key Democrats from New York’s battleground suburbs, particularly from Long Island, are distancing themselves from Mamdani, fearing the potential backlash from Republicans who are likely to use his left-wing platform against them in the upcoming midterm elections.

Rep. Laura Gillen, who represents Nassau County’s 4th District, voiced her concerns about Mamdani’s policies, emphasizing the difference between her own pragmatic approach and Mamdani’s proposals.

“We are not socialists,” she asserted in a Wednesday interview, criticizing Mamdani’s promises of “free everything” and his lack of a realistic economic plan to fund his agenda.

She pointed to Mamdani’s reliance on raising taxes, particularly on top earners and businesses, as an impractical solution.

Criticism of Mamdani’s Tax Plans

Mamdani’s proposal to raise taxes on the top 1% of earners in the city and on businesses to generate $9 billion for his programs was also heavily criticized by Gillen.

She argued that such plans would be unfeasible without approval from the governor and the state legislature, which would make them difficult to implement. “New York City is the economic engine that drives our state, and we need to make sure New York City thrives,” Gillen said. “Zohran Mamdani’s socialist, defund the police platform is wrong for New York City.”

Rep. Suozzi’s Dissent

Rep. Tom Suozzi, another moderate New York Democrat, echoed similar sentiments. Although he initially endorsed former Gov.

Andrew Cuomo and had backed Mayor Eric Adams in the past, Suozzi had strong reservations about Mamdani. “I had serious concerns about Assemblyman Mamdani before [the primary], and that is one of the reasons I endorsed his opponent. Those concerns remain,” Suozzi said in a statement, reinforcing his reluctance to support Mamdani’s vision.

Republican Strategy and Divisions Within the Democratic Party

The National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee (NRCC) has seized on the growing divide, arguing that the endorsement of a Democratic Socialist like Mamdani could be a major liability for Democrats in swing districts.

“Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen’s insubordination is further proof that Democrats have no plan, no message, and no leader,” said NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole.

The NRCC is hoping to exploit Mamdani’s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in areas where socialism is a contentious issue, potentially weakening Democratic support in battleground districts.

Senator Gillibrand and Mamdani’s Global Statement Controversy

At the same time, some national Democratic figures have expressed discomfort with Mamdani’s stance on international issues. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a pro-Israel Democrat, criticized Mamdani for failing to denounce the controversial phrase “globalize the intifada,” which has been associated with anti-Israel sentiment.

This critique highlights the ideological fractures within the party, particularly as Mamdani’s left-wing stances continue to gain attention.

What’s Next?

While Mamdani celebrates his victory in the mayoral race, Democratic leaders, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have refrained from offering a full endorsement, indicating the ongoing rift within the party.

As the political landscape shifts, it remains to be seen whether Mamdani’s platform will gain traction or if the criticisms from suburban Democrats will shape the future of New York City’s leadership in 2026.
