Los Angeles, California – A brand-new Trader Joe’s store has opened in Sherman Oaks, just across the street from one of the grocery giant’s oldest locations.
While the new store has many customers scratching their heads over the proximity, Trader Joe’s has assured that both stores will continue to operate, despite the seemingly redundant setup.
Trader Joe’s Legacy in Sherman Oaks
The original Sherman Oaks store opened in 1973, marking a significant milestone for Trader Joe’s just six years after its founding at the flagship Pasadena location.
The quaint store has long served loyal customers, albeit with a small parking lot, in contrast to its newer counterpart.
“Sherman Oaks Too” – The Modern Makeover
The new store, humorously dubbed “Sherman Oaks too” on the Trader Joe’s website, is located directly across the street from the original.
It occupies a mixed-use residential building and boasts several advantages that the older store cannot offer, including expansive underground parking, wider aisles, and higher ceilings.
With a modern design and even a mural perfect for social media, “Sherman Oaks too” offers the same popular products but with an updated and more spacious shopping experience.
The store’s layout is designed to accommodate the growing customer traffic, featuring more room for shopping carts and wider aisles.
Trader Joe’s Strategy for Expansion
Despite the apparent redundancy, Trader Joe’s is confident in its decision to keep both locations open. The company sees the new location as a way to better serve customers, complementing the older store with an expanded shopping space.
The new Sherman Oaks store is part of the 12 new Trader Joe’s stores planned for opening across the country this year, including a second location on Staten Island.

According to Nakia Rohde, a Trader Joe’s spokesperson, the company is in a continuous growth phase. “Since Trader Joe’s began in 1967, we have been in growth mode.
Some years, we grow more than others, and our goal is always to bring delicious products at great values to as many people as we can,” Rohde stated.
A Bright Future for Both Stores
The Sherman Oaks location is just one example of how Trader Joe’s is evolving to meet growing demand, with both stores offering a great customer experience and a wide variety of products.
For now, the beloved veteran store will continue to serve its long-time customers while the new location caters to an expanding customer base, all within a minute’s walk from each other.
