California highway patrol seeks driver in fatal road rage incident at exposition park

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is looking for a driver accused of killing a 16-year-old bicyclist during a road rage incident near Exposition Park on Friday.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. as a group of about 40 bicyclists rode south on Figueroa Street, just north of Martin Luther King Boulevard. According to investigators, an argument broke out between the bicyclists and the driver of a sedan.

The bicyclists moved off the road and entered a parking lot near BMO Stadium through a gap in the fence. The sedan followed them into the lot, accelerated toward the group, and struck the 16-year-old victim before speeding away.

CHP Sgt. Dan Keene called the event “a tragic and completely preventable incident,” emphasizing that it should never have happened. He also said the victim’s identity will not be released until the family is notified.

“We urge the driver to come forward and speak with us,” Keene stated during a press conference. “No parent should ever have to go through this.”

Although officers have interviewed several witnesses, many left before the CHP and USC Department of Public Safety arrived.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the CHP at (323) 259-3200.
