Earlier this year, she was viciously assaulted by a 17-year-old student, Brendan Depa. The brutal attack rendered Naydich unconscious and inflicted severe injuries, including five broken ribs, a serious concussion, and impaired hearing.
Now an adult, Depa has entered a plea of no contest and may be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison. Naydich, still grappling with the aftermath, is advocating for the maximum penalty and is prepared to testify in court.
However, the challenges persist beyond the assault. The school placed Naydich on unpaid leave, leaving her without income. To survive, she has had to rely on community donations. Despite her dedicated service to the school district, she has received minimal support in her workers’ compensation case.
Depa’s violent behavior continued even in custody at Flagler County jail, where he was involved in another altercation. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 31.
As Naydich copes with lingering neurological symptoms from the attack, she seeks closure. The looming question is whether justice will prevail, bringing peace to Naydich after this traumatic incident. Additionally, this case raises concerns about the safety of educators in our schools.
