Washington, DC – A significant winter storm is moving into the Mid-Atlantic, bringing snow and freezing rain to Virginia, Maryland, and the DC metro area. The storm is expected to intensify this afternoon and evening, with snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour in some locations.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Baltimore/Washington, Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for areas along and south of I-66/US-50, with snow totals ranging from 2-5 inches. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday.

As precipitation transitions, freezing rain and sleet may create hazardous travel conditions, especially west of the Blue Ridge. Rain is expected to take over in most areas by Wednesday night, with icy conditions persisting in colder regions. Tree damage and power outages are possible due to ice accumulation.

Residents are advised to limit travel and prepare for delays. Road crews are treating highways, but rapidly accumulating snow and ice may still cause disruptions. The storm is expected to clear by early Wednesday morning.
