Discover the Ideal Moment to Get Halloween Candy in Illinois

Halloween is approaching, and the store shelves are brimming with fun-size candy bars. But when should you purchase a bag for the festivities?

Let’s begin with the obvious: there’s a clear distinction in the quality of Halloween candy. Are you opting for the cheaper yet less-loved Child’s Play mix, or are you splurging on fun-size Snickers and Milky Ways? (Just to clarify, Circus Peanuts and Candy Corn are perfectly acceptable too, so don’t judge.)

In the past, I’ve bought both economical candy mixes and mini candy bars (due to budget constraints), and I follow a simple strategy. I reserve the fancy candy for the earliest trick-or-treaters, saving the cheaper mix for later in the evening. That’s my plan, and I’m sticking to it.

So, when should you grab your Halloween candy?

If you’ve been to a Hy-Vee store in the past few months, you’ve likely seen this extensive aisle:

While your cart may not be as sugar-laden as hers, it’s getting close to the time to stock up on treats for trick-or-treaters.

According to Food Republic, this is one of the few holiday tasks you can afford to delay. The shopping app Ibotta discovered that you can find great deals on bags of candy if you wait until as late as October 27th to purchase your trick-or-treat candy.

The best deals on Halloween candy can be found in the final week of October, with the average price per unit dropping to $1.94 on October 27th. But don’t procrastinate too much, as waiting until the day before Halloween could result in an increase in the average price per unit to $2.75.

So, whenever you do your grocery shopping this weekend, it’s probably a good time to grab a few bags of your favorite candy. And it’s perfectly fine to stash away a few pieces for yourself – it’s not a holiday faux pas.
