Man Fatally Struck by DUI Driver in Harbor Gateway, Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, — On Thursday night, a man was fatally hit by a driver who has been arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).

Initially, deputies from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Carson and officers from the California Highway Patrol South Los Angeles responded to a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian around 10:45 p.m.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Knox Street in the Harbor Gateway area of Los Angeles.

Upon arrival, the officers found an unresponsive male pedestrian lying in the northbound lanes. Emergency medical personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived and declared the victim deceased.

The driver was operating a beige BMW SUV and was heading north on Vermont Avenue when the collision happened with the pedestrian. The SUV’s front end was visibly damaged, and the driver stayed at the scene.

The responsibility of the scene was then transferred to the Los Angeles Police Department’s South Traffic Division. They conducted field sobriety tests on the driver, which included administering a breathalyzer after several other tests. Subsequently, the driver was taken into custody.

The intersection remained closed for an extended period until the investigation concluded and the area was cleared.

The ongoing investigation will be managed by LAPD’s South Traffic Division.
